Yogyakarta / Yogya / Jogja

Yogyakarta is one of the last intact Javanese Empires in all of Indonesia, with the Sultanate still holds jurisdiction. The Sultan's Palace is the hub of Yogyakarta's traditional life and, despite the advance of modernity, still emanates the spirit of refinement, which has been the hallmark of Yogya's culture for centuries. Yogya is center of Javanese arts and culture, as well as a historically rich and important city.

Yogyakarta is the gateway to reach the world famous "Borobudur" Buddhist temple, which is considered as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Borobudur was built by Sanmaratungga in the 8th century, and was revealed by Sir Thomas Stanford Raffles in 1814. The temple was found in ruined condition and was buried. After the independent (1945), the Indonesian Government gave the restoration of Borobudur high priority, invited archaeological mission and in 1955 requested UNESCO's assistance.

Arrival by morning flight at Jogja. Then we start the visit in Jogja with the discovery of history of Borobudur Temple, the most famous of Indonesia's temples. This huge Buddhist pyramid is a Buddhism's largest shrine in
Indonesia, built in the 9th century. Located north west of Jogyakarta, Borobudur was completed in the second half of the ninth century. Borobudur was unknown and neglected for almost a thousand years, covered under thick
layers of volcanic ash. It consists of hundreds of wonderfully detailed statues and sculptures, representing Buddhist teachings mixed with images of Javanese life of a thousand years ago. We will also visit the mendut Temple, 2.9 km east of Borobudur discovered in 1834. Back for Yogyakarta city, lunch at local restaurant. (If still open)
we visit Sultan Royal Palace, Water Castle (Taman Sari), Ngasem Bird Market, Batik  Home Industry and Silverware at Kotagede. Stay at hotel Puri Arta, Superior room.
Breakfast at hotel, then to Prambanan temple. Prambanan temple is one of the most beautiful Hindu temples of Indonesia with intracate sculptures all over the building, the local people also called the temple the Roro Jonggrang, the temple of the slender virgin.
